Classification by Measurement Principle
Volumetric flow measurement: The volume of fluid passing through a cross-section per unit time, such as turbine, vortex, and electromagnetic methods
Mass flow measurement: Directly measures the mass of the fluid, such as Coriolis and thermal principles
Differential Pressure Measurement: Calculates flow rate based on the pressure difference generated as the fluid passes through a throttling element
Common Types and Applications
Electromagnetic Flowmeters: Suitable for conductive liquids; measurements are unaffected by fluid density or viscosity
Vortex Flowmeters: Utilize the frequency of vortices generated as the fluid flows around an orifice; suitable for steam, gas, or liquid
Turbine Flow Meters: The impeller speed is proportional to the flow velocity; used for clean, low-viscosity liquids
Ultrasonic Flow Meters: Time-of-flight or Doppler methods; can be clamp-on mounted; non-contact measurement
